Acacia Tapestries

This is Hedge Wattle (Acacia Paradoxa) - favoured by early settlers for keeping stock in - and predators out. Hard to see in this photo, but each branch has rows of sharp thorns - nasty! Another from my walk along Mullum Mullum Creek in Victoria

Another from my walk along Mullum Mullum Creek - Black Wattle (Acacia Mearnsii). These flowers - and the foliage - look a lot like Silver Wattle (Acacia Dealbata), which flowers much earlier. The name comes from the tree trunks turning black as they age - not to be confused with Blackwood (Acacia Melanoxylon).

Giraffe with tree in Kenya / Africa

This is a wattle called Prickly Moses ( Acacia Verticillata). The branches are covered with prickly thorns - so it lives up to its name! Wattles are everywhere in Spring in Victoria - their yellow or creamy flowers really light up the place after the gloom of Winter!

Rothschild's Giraffe, Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi. Lake Nakuru National Park, Kenya, East Africa. Feeding on Acacia late afternoon. Living in very few areas of Africa these giraffes are endangered. The population is potentially close to meeting the population threshold for Critically Endangered under criterion C, depending on the number of individuals, if any, that survive in south Sudan. There are only about 700 in the wild. They have similar markings to the Reticulated Giraffe but are characterised by unpatterned legs, which looks like they are wearing knee-high white socks. A sure sign that Spring is not far away - the Myrtle Wattle (Acacia Myrtifolia) comes into flower - and lights up the forest! Found at Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve in Croydon North, Victoria, Australia.

The national floral emblem of Australia, the Golden Wattle is a glorious sight in Spring. Its proper name is Acacia Pycnantha.
