A small, slim black cuckoo rather similar to Black Drongo but smaller, with a curved bill. Adult black with white bars in the undertail, shorter-tailed juvenile deep blackish gray with bright white dots in wings and flanks. Rather sedentary and difficult to see in tangled vegetation of scrubby and edge habitats in lowland and foothill forests. Song a loud, vibrant, rapid series of ascending hoarse whistles. Tom Turkey Profile ©Debra Martz I first spotted a male turkey in full display near the visitors center shortly after our arrival at Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park. About a mile along the main trail into the park, I spotted a number of turkeys back in the trees so I just stood around awhile. Eventually, this gobbler come out of the trees where the sunlight really showed off all its details and colors. The Best of My Backside ©Debra Martz The Tri-colored Herons are beautiful in any side you get to see especially in the Spring when they add extra flair for breeding season. It's standing on a board, possibly a remnant from Hurricane Harvey, from the old boardwalk. High Stepping Whistling Duck ©Debra Martz I was not quite sure what the high stepping was all about but this Black-Bellied Whistling Duck did this repeatedly. Odd thing was that it only di this move with its right leg and foot. The left took a normal step each time. Dreamy Heron ©Debra Martz I had just been admiring another Tri-colored Heron from the boardwalk over the marsh area, then I turned onto the boardwalk that goes out to the bay when I spotted this one in the Mangroves. I thought this was a beautiful, dream-like pose by this Heron as it gently preened its gorgeous plumage. Ring-billed Gull Handrail Walker ©Debra Martz What I can say other than to advise keeping your hands off the handrails! This one was using the rail to stroll slowly along, stop and check the waters below for possible prey and stroll again leaving its mark. Even when I walked on by, it did not depart the rail. Common Gallinule Looking Fluffy by Debra Martz The tail showing off white under tail feathers is just one of the displays of courtship during mating season. And, it was March so this is a possible reason for the raised tail. The Common Gallinule in the Americas were once known as the Common Moorhen like those of the Old World. Tiny and active inhabitant of forest and forest edge in lowlands and foothills. Male is bright blue-gray above and lemony-yellow below, with a distinctive red “bleeding” smudge on the yellow chest; it also has an often inconspicuous orange crown stripe. Female is brownish-yellow above with paler underparts. Both sexes have a distinctive pale moustache stripe, which the similar Yellow-rumped Flowerpecker lacks. Gives sharp buzzy calls, often quickly in succession. (Source: eBird)

Guarding the Light ©Debra Martz I couldn't believe this Brown Pelican was perched up high on this street light. I was in the area about 4 years ago and saw one perched in the exact same place and thought it was strange at the time as I had never seen a pelican perch on something like this. I guess it did offer a good vantage point as it was right by the boat ramp at Goose Island State Park in Texas. It was not bothered by my presence as it stayed put while I walked around taking photos...guess it didn't want another pelican or bird to get its light. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved

Roseate Spoonbills Resting Time ©Debra Martz As luck would have it I would finally see some Roseate Spoonbills at a decent distance but they all had there heads tucked in for a nap. Perhaps because they rest on only one leg, this one wobbled a bit so I at least got a quick sight of its namesake, the spoonbill, before it tucked back into position.
