Azai Tapestries
Description: The Azai clan (浅井) was a line of daimyos during Japan’s Sengoku jidai that was based in Omi Province (present day Shiga Prefecture). The Azai clan, along with the Asakura clan, opposed Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century. They were defeated by him at the Battle of Anegawa in 1570, and all but eliminated when their home castle, Odani Castle, was taken three years later. This is the kamon (family crest) of the Azai clan, three kikkō (turtle shell) with hanabishi (flower in diamond shape) in the center. Below the crest is “Azai” in kanji.
Description: Azai Nagamasa (浅井長政) was the last daimyo of Azai clan during the Sengoku period of Japan, his clan were located in northern Omi Province, east of Lake Biwa. He was the brother-in-law of Oda Nobunaga, but later became one of Nobunaga's enemies when Nobunaga decided to attack the allies of Azai, the Asakura clan. Nagamasa and his clan were destroyed by Oda Nobunaga in 1573. The kamon of Azai clan is Mitsumori Kikkou ni Hanabishi (三盛龜甲に花菱) or "Flower diamond in three turtle shell"
