Description: In the Aztec pantheon, Coyolxauhqui (pronounced “Coyolshquee”), is the daughter of Coatlique. She and her brothers attempted to murder their mother who is the mother of all deities. Yet it turns out that Coyolxauhqui has a redeeming but complicated quality. While she may have been defeated and dismembered, her parts transformed into the phases of the enduring moon, providing light for those in darkness. According to Chicana feminist Gloria Anzaldua, this metamorphosis represents powerful healing and resilience. So Coyolxauhqui serves as a major symbol for survival and transformation.
