Baleen Whale Tapestries
Description: The humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) is a species of baleen whale found in oceans across the world. They feed in polar regions, before migrating to the equator to breed, crossing half the length of the planet each year. From being critically endangered in the early 20th century, their numbers have gradually increased after most countries stopped whaling. Many are still killed each year, however, in collisions with ships and through entanglement in abandoned fishing line. Things will be ok, and with a little work, things will get better. ____________________________________________________ Understanding Whale is a part of the Comfort Critters. Description: Humpback whales can be found in all of the major oceans. Two distinct migratory populations of humpback whales have been identified off of the east and west coasts of Australia. Here they feed mainly on krill and copepods, but they will also eat small schooling fish, including juvenile salmon and other juvenile fish species. While humpback populations have partially recovered after being hunted nearly to extinction, they are still susceptible to danger from getting tangled in fishing nets, noise pollution, and collisions with ships.
