Description: This is an image of the open, outer gallery on the south side of the Angkor Wat temple. The temple is enormous. Although we were there with many hundreds of others, it wasn't difficult to find incredible views, such as this, without another person in sight. Although the temple was built about 900 years ago, it is a remarkable testament to its builders in that it remains an incredible architectural masterpiece today. It is an awe-inspiring experience to walk through the complex, one that I won't forget. What I love about this image is the incredible depth; the vanishing point at the far end. Think of the engineering required to build something so straight all those years ago.
Description: This image is of a section of Hadrian's Wall, looking east, near Once Brewed, Northumberland. It is this section where the wall reaches its highest elevation, at about 1100'. As an aside, this is quite close to where the ill-fated Sycamore Gap tree was felled a few years ago. The countryside around the area is spectacular, with its rolling hills and a much varied rural landscape. The escarpment in the distance would have acted as part of the defences in front of the wall. Alas, there's no part of the wall that remains fully intact, much of it was pillaged for its stone. However, the original line of the wall is largely still evident along its 73 mile (117 km) length (coast to coast) Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The island has had a turbulent past with raids by the Vikings and being in the volatile "Borders" region between England and Scotland. Access to the island is via a causeway that floods twice a day, so you have to time your visit accordingly. The approach to the castle is quite dramatic as the mound upon which it sits is the highest point on an otherwise very flat landscape. We were told that the rocky outcrop was all that remains of a long extinct volcano. Being so elevated, it offered a strategic advantage to those who might have defended it. Description: This is an image of the tall Gothic-arched windows in the Lady Chapel adjacent to Ely Cathedral, in Cambridgeshire, England. The intricate tracery allows natural light to flood into chapel's interior. The architecture showcases the ornate stonework and a majestic sense of space. Built in the 14th century, the chapel sits next to the cathedral. When we were there, it looked as if they were setting up for a choral presentation, which only shows that if you build something that is truly useful, those who follow will look after it, even after 700 years.
Description: This is an image, in part, of the ruins of the priory on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which is off the northwest coast of England. The island is tidal and connected to the mainland by a causeway, which floods twice a day. The ruins date from the establishment of the priory by the Normans, following the "Conquest", but the site had previously been that of a monastery with a history that goes back to the mid-7th century. The original monastery was destroyed during the Viking raids. The stone arches and walls are all that remains of the old priory, but these ruins hint at the grand architecture from that bygone era.
Description: This is an image of the barbican entrance into Alnwick Castle, in Alnwick, England. Barbicans were a common defensive feature of castles in the middle ages as they served as a way of defending the main entrance. Those entering the castle would be contained, their numbers limited by the space within the inner and outer gates, and overlooked by defenders on the walls surrounding the barbican. It would have been a dangerous place to enter if you bad intentions.

Description: This is an image of one of the aisles running adjacent to the nave within the ruins of Fountains Abbey, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, England. The abbey was founded in the 12th century and destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th. Today, the ruins are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in England as a grade 1 listed property, which recognises the ruins as one of the most significant of its type in Europe. That all said, the ruins are captivating. I understand that Henry VIII's forces removed the roof to the let the elements take their toll on the interior. The walls are essentially intact, so the grace of the place is still so evident. the wide nave, the aisles, the tower, the now vacant windows. It must have been so glorious.

But what do you do with a castle when there's no more need for a castle, well you convert it into a very novel home, which is what you see today, as a museum.
Description: While driving in Co, Clare, Ireland, I came across the ruins of an old church. It was off the beaten track, but a delight to find. Later I did some research to find that the church had been called St. John's, but I've no idea when it fell into ruin. From what I could tell the cemetery was still active, evidenced by the fact that many graves were located within the old wall, some even with fresh flowers. The day was wet and blustery with fresh winds off the nearby Atlantic. Even for the wildness of the day, the place was peaceful.
