Oriental Theatre - 24 W. Randolph St. Chicago, IL 60603 "As one of the first motion picture palaces whose décor was inspired by the Far East, Chicago’s Oriental Theatre opened to much fanfare on May 8, 1926. Designed by George L. and Cornelius W. Rapp for theatre managers Balaban and Katz, the theatre, a virtual museum of Asian art, presented popular first-run motion pictures, complemented by lavish stage shows. Turbaned ushers led patrons from the lobby, with polychrome figures and large mosaics of an Indian prince and princess, through an inner foyer with elephant-throne chairs and multicolored glazed Buddhas, to the auditorium’s 'hasheesh-dream décor.' In the heart of downtown Chicago's Loop area stands the Oriental Theater, formerly known as the Iroquois Theater, where ghostly echoes of a tragic past continue to resonate. In the infamous fire of 1903, nearly 600 souls met their untimely end. Although the theater underwent a complete transformation and a rebranding, the spirits of the departed endured. Ghostly apparitions have been reported in "Death Alley," the somber street behind the theater where the bodies of the victims were once laid to rest—a chilling reminder of the theater's haunting history and a prominent stop on Chicago's ghost tours.

Deep within the iO Theater in the walls of the back offices lurks a pumpkin. Carved on the pumpkin is the face if iO Theater founder and improv legend and anti-hero, Del Close. This design is inspired by that pumpkin. As of December 2023, the pumpkin can be found on top of the break room fridge.
