Time to celebrate in furry style!

Wild Turkey Strut, colored pencil on drafting film by Conni Schaftenaar A friend who frequently hunts on our farm sets up game cameras on land where he hunts just to track what is passing by. We do have wild turkeys that frequent our farm, but the friend's game camera caught this guy in full turkey strut display on another farm a couple of miles north of us. He gave me permission to use his photo to do this colored pencil work. This will end up in his "man cave" along with a painting I did for him of his hunting dog. Because the color goes to the edge, this colored pencil work is considered a painting, not a drawing.

I created this mandala as a way of expressing my inner harmony and balance. I chose the colors to represent the different aspects of my personality and emotions. Pink and orange are for my passion and creativity, blue and green are for my calmness and wisdom. I used a black background to contrast the vivid colors and make them stand out more. I drew the mandala using a compass, a ruler, and a pencil. I started from the center and worked my way outwards, making sure that each layer was symmetrical and aligned. I used different shapes and patterns to create a sense of variety and complexity. I filled in the details with colored pencils, blending and shading them to create depth and texture.

A while back, I made a pencil portrait of a kitten. I redid the picture to make it more of a PNG image to pop out in the colors chosen for products, removing the paper background. I hope you guys like it, and any suggestions (besides anything mean, of course) are welcome!

Colo(u)red Pencils

I created this mixed media composition digitally from three of my works, also on my gallery. "Apple Blossoms in the Spring" is a larger vertical work done in watercolor on Masa paper, which gives that lovely faux batik look in the background areas. The two bees were done in colored pencil and ultimately ended up on flowers, but I kept high res scans of the bees on white, also. I placed the bees on a cropped section of my apple blossoms painting (reference photo for the blossoms is mine).
