We spent a few hours in the picturesque setting of Compton Acres (Poole, Dorset), one of the finest privately owned gardens in Southern England. The weather was rather overcast and a little chilly for the time of the year (especially for those used to the warmer climes of South Aus). However, I'm sure we grabbed a few good shots between us. A pair of Mallard ducks on the River Blyth near Ha'penny Woods in Bedlington, Northumberland. I liked the way the female was looking quite coy, and he could have been thinking 'well, do you fancy me or not?'

This painting was specifically done for an art exhibition with a Celtic theme. I was reading some medieval stories about courting etc. and ended up painting with watercolour depicting woodmen from the forest dressed in their best clothes attending a market day festival in a nearby town with the specific purpose of courting or wooding the fair maidens there. It was a bit of fun to research and paint, especially researching the modes of dress for the period. I have included it here for the fans of all things Celtic and medieval and I thought it might be a suitable artwork for a child's room or as a card for Valentine's Day.

A courting pair of Oriental Pied Hornbills sit in a tree after feasting on figs ~ the male romancing ~ 'wooing and cooing' ~ the 'love of his life'. It is well known that once courtship establishes that hornbills pair for life... As such loss of one ~ would mean the demise of the other ~ along with the death or potential 'loss of succession' of all their offspring. For this reason, and 'many others' and the 'fact that we are losing biodiversity at an astonishing rate'... bird poaching and wildlife trade ~ should be 'stringently monitored and regulated' on the Island of Borneo.

A colourful male grey heron seems to sit high up within the treetops as if to say to the slightly smaller female... "hi honey, why don't you come up and see me sometime...?"
