Description: The current form of the Burmese cat can trace its roots to one Burmese ancestor named Wong Mau, who was a female Burmese brought to the United States in 1930. The breed originates on the Thai-Burma border where they were known locally as Thongdaeng or Supphalak which means "copper color." The original version of this cat was dark brown but now can be found in many different colors after modern cultivators strengthened the breed by mixing it with other types of cats.
Description: The Tonkinese cat bears a strong resemblance to the Siamese and Burmese cat varieties, a trait that for a long time almost destroyed it. Native to Malaysia, the breed was folded into the similar breeds as variants for many years until a concerted effort of crossbreeding Siamese and Burmese to bring back Tonkinese traits saw the original breed established in 2001. The name refers to the Tonkin region of Indochina, even though the cat itself has no ties to that area of the world.
