Disco Sucks Tapestries
Description: Back in 1979, the Disco Sucks movement was hitting a fever pitch as disco music was seemingly everywhere. Rock n’ rollers were sick of it and ultimately disco paid the price as its popularity began to wane pretty rapidly heading into the '80s. While disco may have left the airwaves and been replaced with all kinds of new music that also sucks, it’s safe to say that disco still sucks and will forever suck.
Description: On July 12, 1979, 48,000 fans packed Chicago’s Comiskey Park for a doubleheader that included a promotion involving blowing up disco records. The event devolved into a fiery riot when crazed rock n' roll fans stormed the field as part of an anti-disco promotional event when a local disc jockey took the field between games to destroy the records listeners had brought. Once the crate of disco records had blown up, the crowd chanting 'DISCO SUCKS' cheered uproariously and began taking the field. From there they began throwing records and cherry bombs, tearing up the field and stadium facilities and otherwise devolving into an all-out riot that ended up with the Chicago PD riot squad being called in.
Description: In the late 1970s, disco was the most popular music genre in America, however, disco sparked a major backlash from rock music fans as popular culture cultivated a widespread perception that disco was taking over. This lead to a widespread 'disco sucks' movement that could be found just about everywhere, from messages on t-shirts to an all out riot in Chicago. During the mid-seventies, this fuzzy little monster started flipping everyone off, and nobody really knows why. He managed to stick around well into the ’80s, but instead of just standing around and flipping the bird, he suddenly started being portrayed as doing more than just flipping people off, like holding signs saying "I'd rather eat shit than disco."
