Tranquil Edinburgh summer scene of Water of Leith flowing through picturesque and historic Dean Village

A hidden corner that hugs the Water of Leith, on my way to the Botanical Gardens. A day of glorious Scottish sunshine, of a clear blue sky and gentle warmth. The stone radiates gold, brilliant white from the woodwork, with dots of yellow from sunflowers. It is quiet here, with Stockbridge a short walk away. The work is rich in realism and detail, filled with vivid colour; A wonderful souvenir of Edinburgh and a perfect gift.

According to tradition, St. Bernard's Well near Stockbridge in Edinburgh, Scotland was re-discovered by three Heriot's school boys while fishing in the Water of Leith in 1760. Legend has it that it was originally discovered by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, the founder of the Cistercian Order, in the 12th Century. After being poorly received at court, and suffering from a sickness, he went to live in a cave near the Water of Leith. There, he found the spring and drank its healing waters until his strength returned. Chemical analysis revealed that the water was similar to the sulphur springs at Harrogate in Yorkshire. In September 1760 the mineral spring was covered by a small wellhouse.

I was somewhat early for the RB meet in Edinburgh today (26 April 09) so Sylvia and I had a walk into the very pretty Dean Village. This shot is looking east from the little bridge (Bell's Brae Bridge) over the Water of Leith in Dean Village, Edinburgh, Scotland. The church is Holy Trinity Church at the North end of Dean Bridge. Later, Sylvia went off shopping and I went off to participate in the meet. Thank to Chris Clark for organising a good day out with a really nice bunch of people. Holy Trinity Church, Dean Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland. John Henderson was the architect, and the church was built in 1838 following the earlier construction of the Dean Bridge in 1832. The church was originally Scottish Episcopal but closed and was converted into an electricity transformer / sub-station. The church is currently home to: Christian Centre Ministries; incorporating - RHEMA Church - RHEMA Bible College - Kingdom Christian School - Women On the Word - Frontline Youth The church is located at the North side of the Dean Bridge which crosses the Water of Leith at Dean Village.
