In 1912, an Excelsior was the first motorcycle to be officially timed at a speed of 100 mph, and by 1928, Excelsior was the third-largest manufacturer in the U.S. motorcycle market, but they would never make it to second place. In 1929, the stock market crash and the resulting Great Depression caused motorcycle sales to plummet. Excelsior ceased operations in September 1931, putting an end to one of America's earliest motorcycle manufacturers and popular bikes like the Big X and Super X.
