The Forth Rail Bridge here as a digitally produced stylised graphic drawing. This was produced from my original image captured just before passing under the bridge. This is the oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland connecting Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A partial shot of the north span of the Forth Bridge and the island of Inchgarvie (or Inch Garvie) at South Queensferry, Scotland. Inchgarvie contains the remains of a castle, coast battery and artillery fortifications. Famously during WWII, the Germans published a blurry aerial photograph showing the Rail bridge and what they claimed was a plume of smoke from a direct hit on the bridge. Of course they had missed and mistook Inch Garvie for the smoke. The name 'Inch Garvie' is probably originally of Gaelic derivation, meaning 'rough island'. Best viewed Larger. The oldest of the three bridges which cross the Firth of Forth in the west of Scotland. This iconic steel cantilever structure - a symbol of Scotland's engineering heritage - connects Fife on the north bank and West Lothian in the south - just west of Edinburgh. It was voted Scotland's greatest man-made structure in 2016 and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction started in 1882 and the bridge was opened by the Prince of Wales, the future King Edward VII, in 1890.

Forth Rail and a single line. The Forth Rail Bridge is one of the most recognisable man made structures in Scotland, possibly even the world. It has been a permanent fixture over the Firth of Forth for over 120 years and is still in use. This single line piece has been in the pipeline for quite a while. The scale and detail required proved difficult and can be seen in the lesser quality of some of the lines. However, it encapsulates the spirit of the Single Line collection. The Forth Road Bridge at South Queensferry, Scotland at sunset in early August. Located 9 miles (15 km) west of Edinburgh, the Forth Road Bridge spans the Firth of Forth between South Queensferry and North Queensferry. When it was opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 4th September, 1964, the bridge was the longest in the world outside the USA. The bridge is nearly 1828m (2000 yards) long while its main span, of 1006m (3300 feet), is the tenth longest in the world; its towers are over 150m (500 feet) high. The deck, which carries four lanes of traffic with two walkways, is suspended from cables which are 5.9cm (2.3 inches) in diameter and composed of 11,618 high-tensile steel wires, giving a total length of wire of 49,280 km.

This memorial to the "men and boys" who lost their lives building the Forth Rail Bridge, South Queensferry, Scotland was unveiled on 4th July 2007 by Scotland's First Minister Alex Salmond. The First Minister performed the unveiling along with the consul general of Japan Shuhei Takahashi in light of the Japanese engineers who worked on the bridge's construction. He was joined at the event by Hamish Gilchrist, who created the memorial and also paid tribute to those who died in the construction of the bridge. Work began on the one-and-a-half mile bridge between South Queensferry and Fife in 1883 and at its peak 4,600 worked on it.
