Tugs Belltown Tavern 1976 Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Tugs Belltown Tavern is considered by many to be the best Seattle gay bar of all time. The legendary Tugs opened their doors in October 1976 at 2207 1st Ave. and quickly showed the city what a gay bar could be. The tavern hosted a wide variety of musical style theme nights, making the transition from jukebox-only to live DJs in '78. They had a downstairs DJ booth where patrons could walk up to the window and look at the record being played. Customers would dance until dawn, often spilling into the streets or up on the roof in the small hours. Tugs also hosted live shows, movie nights, and tons of other regular events (every Saturday was Spaghetti Night!) which were all detailed in a monthly calendar that was designed and printed by hand.

Little Jim's Boystown 1975 Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Often described as the gay Cheers, Little Jim’s was the first gay bar in Boystown when it opened in 1975, making it the second-oldest gay bar in Chicago. In the early days, the bar had darkened windows to protect the safety of its customers. Within a few years of opening, more gay bars followed Little Jim's lead into the neighborhood. The divey, late-night spot became both a Boystown institution and one of the longest-running independently owned bars in the Chicago. A big part of the bar's legacy is that it was the first and only bar on Halsted Street to be fully integrated. Black, white, and Hispanic people all mingled and socialized there – literally everyone was welcome.

Harvey's San Francisco 1996 Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Located in San Francisco's Castro District at 500 Castro Street, Harvey's was an iconic bar and restaurant that welcomed tourists and regulars alike for over a quarter-century. Occupying a space that originally housed The Elephant Walk gay bar, which first opened in 1974, Harvey's was steeped in history based on location alone. After a major fire gutted the building in 1988, The Elephant Walk required extensive work to get it back up and running, so they ended up closing down as a result. Named after gay politician and activist Harvey Milk, Harvey's took over the space in 1996, residing at the popular corner location until early 2023 when they closed up shop.

Description: This Retro Gay Bar design is purple, kitschy, and utterly fabulous! Sitting on mid century modern barstools, drinking their fun, pink beverages, these dapper gentlemen are having a gay ol’ time. The hunky bartender with a pink bowtie is already pouring the next round. The silhouettes of atomic liquor bottles line the wall and the vintage 1960’s sputnik style light fixture hangs off to the side. The only thing straight about this bar is the bar!

The Black Cat Tavern 1966 Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Established in November 1966, The Black Cat Tavern was a gay bar located in Los Angeles, California's Silver Lake neighborhood. Two months later, on New Year's Eve, several plainclothes LAPD officers infiltrated the tavern. After arresting several patrons for kissing, the undercover officers began beating several revelers, ultimately arresting fourteen patrons for assault and public lewdness. With no resolve for those wrongfully attacked and arrested, a civil demonstration of over 200 people to protest the raids was held on February 11 outside The Black Cat Tavern. This was one of the first demonstrations in the U.S. protesting police brutality against members of the LGBT community, preceding the Stonewall riots by over two years.

Vintage Fe-Be's Gay Bar San Francisco Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: One thing about Fe-Be's that most people know it is that it was the first leather bar on Folsom Street. If there is a second thing people know, it's that the bar was the place that the iconic "Leather David" was born. The bar, which opened at 1501 Folsom Street on July 26, 1966, deserves to be remembered for more than the statue, despite its iconic nature. It was a home to outlaw gay bikers, owners Don Geist and John Kissinger, who fought the law. The bar eventually closed on June 12, 1986

Vintage Alfies Gay Bar San Francisco Distressed Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: A retro‑inspired tribute to Alfie’s, the iconic gay disco bar that lit up 2140 Market Street from 1977 to 1983. The design captures the club’s electric, post‑Mineshaft atmosphere—raised dance floor, mirrored‑era swagger, and the unmistakable Castro nightlife energy of late‑70s San Francisco. Alfie’s wasn’t just a bar; it was a cultural hinge point, hosting Harvey Milk’s election‑night celebration and helping define the city’s emerging queer disco scene. This artwork channels that history with bold vintage styling, evoking the sound, sweat, and freedom of a neighborhood in full bloom.
