Geisha Tapestries
Description: Geisha are female Japanese entertainers who perform traditional Japanese artforms, such as traditional dance and singing. They are distinctively characterized by the kimono and the oshiroi makeup they wear. Contrary to popular belief, geisha are not the Eastern equivalent of a prostitute - a misconception originating in the West due to foreign interactions with oiran (courtesans) and other sex workers, whose appearance had been similar to that of geisha.
Description: Ink, gouache and digital. Japanese women have been perfecting the art of entertainment for hundreds of years. Yet the term geisha, or geigi, only emerged in the 18th century. Geishas are seen as successful, skilled and emotionally strong. There is no equivalent to geisha in the West, therefore, the literal translation ‘entertainer’ is often used.
