Gogol Tapestries
Description: I want to live to think and to suffer. This hauntingly beautiful mixed-media collage pays tribute to Alexander Pushkin — the father of modern Russian literature, the greatest poet in the Russian language, and a soul so luminous and so dangerous that the tsar's secret police monitored his every word. His elegant classical portrait — painted with the refinement of the early 19th century — is tenderly overlaid with torn fragments of Cyrillic newsprint and dense literary text, as if his own words have wrapped themselves around him like a second skin. A bold vertical strip of newspaper bearing his name in stark modern type cuts through the composition, while raw strokes of crimson red slash across his cheek — passion, poetry, and the duel
