Goring Tapestries

A digital drawing of the superb view over the Thames Valley from Lardon Chase. Below is the village of Streatley-on-Thames in West Berkshire, whose church can be seen in the centre. Then further across, passing over the Thames (invisible here) to Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire. Beyond that the lower slopes of the Chiltern Hills. Lardon Chase, also called Streatley Hill, is a nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on chalk grassland rising steeply above the village.

Charles (CM) Russell, the “cowboy artist”, created more than 2,000 paintings of cowboys, Indians, and landscapes set in the Western United States. He lived and worked among the cowboys and the Blood Indian tribe in his younger years. This painting is called “Buffalo Hunt” and depicts a band of Indians bringing down a huge bison who has attacked a brave with bow and arrows.

This is where the River Thames makes its way between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs and the Chiltern Hills - this stretch being known as the Goring Gap. A variety of boats are found here - launches, racing boats, canoes, kayaks - and sailing boats. Seen on a bright summer day on a walk along the Thames Path National Trail which stretches from Cricklade in the Cotswolds to the Thames Barrier.

The view from the north bank of the River Thames at Goring in Oxfordshire, England, looking across to Streatley village and Streatley Hill, or Lardon Chase in Berkshire. Here the Thames flows between the North Wessex or Berkshire Downs to the south and the Chiltern Hills to the north, this feature being known as the Goring Gap.
