Herring Gull Tapestries

Taken on the East Coast near the town of South Shields,

A young Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) sitting on a lifebelt holder on the River Blyth in Northumberland. The red of the lifebelt holder is reflected on the bird's breast giving it the look of a Robin - with a bit of imagination!

The herring gull, although it gets bad press for being a scavenger - you've gotta admit - they are pretty stunning as an example of natures wonders.

I think gulls look good in pink. This herring gull just wants to know - got any fries? From my original oil painting.

Graceful Flight of a Herring Gull by Debra Martz While the activity of birds was heavy on the water, I took to watching this young Herring Gull making lazy and graceful circles in the sky each time coming just a bit closer to me. These guys get everywhere... the European herring gull (Larus argentatus) but if you are like me ~ their presence is appreciated... The scientific name is from Latin. Larus refers to gull or other large seabird and argentatus means 'decorated with silver'. If you immerse yourself in the Wild and Wildlife - you remove yourself from the technology heavy 'solid state of here and now' ~ and imbibe in a much different vibration... This is one of 2 young Herring Gulls that live next door to me. This one is still doing very short, unstable flights to and from my garage roof. It was playing with a clothes peg, when it suddenly got the urge to try it's wings out again, and if you look closely, you can see the peg in it's bill. We often see herring gulls as individual opportunistic scavengers, but in some instances avian interactions do occur between different species and some of the waders in particular the big waders, such as this grey heron here... do give way to a more symbiotic approach to fishing. I have spent hours just watching and observing these interactions in my local area and along the foryd and come to the conclusion that there is some element of altruism at play here... In some instances, what the gull scares into the shadows, the heron picks up on and vica versa... and so it can often be seen that they fish together... This kind of mutual co-operation can be often seen within the animal kingdom... If only humans started to work from t...

Juvenile Seagull In Flight ©Debra Martz When visiting the Great Plains State Park in Oklahoma, I always make a stop at the spillway as there will normally be seagulls there at the very least. This young Herring Gull came flying by shortly after I made it to the 2nd tier. It is a migratory gull that I see in both Fall and Spring migration.
