It is one of many Icelandic magical staves, or galdrastafir, which were supposedly used to channel magic in specific ways. There were sigils for protection, strength, guidance and assistance with specific tasks or areas of life.

Vegvisir is an Icelandic magical stave intended to help the bearer find their way through rough weather. The Runes say: "heill þú á sinnum sér! heill þú aftr komir! " which translate as: May you be safe on the way, may you come back safely.
