One more of the many splendid beaches of Kefalonia, under the strange name "Xi". It is famous for its deep orange, almost red, sand, making a great contrast with the white rocks. It is located on the southwest part of the island, in Paliki peninsula.

Kefalonia is an island full of mystery and "peculiar" places. One of them is Mellisani cave, on the eastern part of the island, the first "cabriolet" cave i've seen in my life. Its roof collapsed after an earthquake some 5.000 years ago. You can make a small tour by small boat. The other strange thing about this cave is the water that's running through it, which is half "sweet" and half "salty". It is connected with another of the mysteries of the island. On the western part of the island, close to the town of Argostoli, there is a place called "Katavothres", where in some point the waters of a small creek, suddenly get "swallowed" by the ground. Petani (or "Petanoi") beach is located at the western end of the island, in Paliki Peninsula and it is known since the Homeric Era. Talking about Homer, although most of the scients identify Homeric Ithaca with modern-day Ithaca island, there are some scients who believe that Homeric Ithaca is modern-day Kefalonia. Some of them believe that Ulisses' kingdom was located somewhere in Paliki Peninsula, while others believe that it was located, somewhere between Poros and Skala, on the southeast side of Kefalonia.

The only issue was the mosquitos that seemed to take a fancy to me which I found out later may have something to do with whatever blood group you are. Of the approximate 365 villages on this large and diverse island, Fiscardo is unique in that it is the only village on Kefalonia that has so many of the original Venetian buildings intact and still in use.
