Monument Valley provides perhaps the most enduring and definitive images of the American West. The isolated red mesas and buttes surrounded by an empty, sandy desert have been filmed and photographed countless times over the years for movies, adverts, and holiday brochures. This is a stack of 92 images combined to show the path of the stars as they rose over the mittens and Merrick Butte in Monument Valley, Arizona. The time span for the complete sequence was an hour. The red glow in the distance is, I believe, the lights of Bluff, Utah. The star cluster over the red glow, between the East Mitten and West Mitten, is Pleiades, also known as M45.

One day a friend of mine sent me a text saying "Jack Barakat is my spirit animal" and I thought that would be cool on a t-shirt, so I made that one and then thought I should make them for the rest of the band members too.

This is what you see at North Window View in Monument Valley, looking between Merrick Butte (left) and the East Mitten (right). This was taken on a cold day in December, 2013. It had snowed the night before.

It had rained most of the morning. This was the first time the clouds rose high enough to see Elephant Butte, off to the right. Fifteen minutes later the rain came through again and obscured the view to the point where you couldn't even see the mittens. Dramatic weather only serves to enhance the view of Monument Valley in northern Arizona.

Joseph Carey Merrick (5 August 1862 – 11 April 1890), often erroneously called John Merrick, was an English man known for having severe deformities. relatively small piece at 5"x7", but man the stippling for this took many hours. Ink on paper drawing of the elephant man's skull.
