Meteora Tapestries

Monasteries on the top of Giant rocks seem miraculous and make Meteora one of the most spectacular places in Greece.

Here you can see 2 of the major monasteries of Meteora , the Varlaam monastery, on the left and Roussanou Monastery in the centre, surround by fog. Varlaam monastery took its name by the first monk who climbed the 595 metres of the vertical rock in the 14th century, Varlaam, the one who built the first church on the rock. (although in the photo it seems that this rock is connected with the rest of the land, it's not true, the only way to reach there was to climb, nowadays you can reach through a bridge). Roussanou monastery (or Agias Varvaras monastery) was established probably in 1388 by monks Necodemos and Benediktos.

The first one who climbed this rock, was an anchorite, named Varlaam around 1350 (that's where the name of the monastery comes from), who built a small church. After his death, the rock remained uninhabited for more than a century. In the beggining of the 16th century, two brothers, Nektarios and Theofanis climbed the rock. In 1518 they started reconstructing the church that Varlaam had built, and also built two more churchs. With the help of other monks that later climbed the rock they built the monastic "complex" that you can see in the photo and covers almost...

Varlaam Monastery

The monastery that you see nestled in the rocks (a 4-storey building, looking so small in front of the majestic rocks), is Saint Nicholas Anapafsas, one of the 6 still active monasteries (once upon a time they were 24) in Meteora (Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) This one was established around the 14th century. The monastic complex of Meteora is a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

This is brother Dometios. I met him at the Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) Monastery, Meteora, Greece. We talked a lot, he is a very interesting man, a peaceful, relaxed personality, seems happy with his life, confident about the road he has chosen. He has climbed almost every rock of Meteora. He gave me important directions for "secret" footpaths of Meteora. He showed great interest about my camera and photography in general. He gave me permission to take a couple of photos. Brother Dometios, lives in Agia Triada Monastery, for the last 20 years, since he was 23 y/o. One of the many monasteries in Meteora

Roussanou Monastery (Meteora, Trikala, Thessaly, Greece) is also know as Agias Varvaras Monastery. It was established (probably) around 1388 by the monks Necodemus and Benedict. Today functions as a nunnery. Open to visitors daily, except Wednesday, from 09:00-14:00 (winter) and 09:00-18:00 (summer).

A rather classic POV of the Meteora, photo taken from a top of a rock, which I think is called "Psaropetra" (means "fishstone"). My goal was to take a sunset photo, but as you can see the cloudy sky had a different opinion. Apart from the huge cultural, religious and natural interest of Meteora, it is also one of the best regions in Greece for climbing. More than 50 rocky towers are waiting for those who like this sport. The history of climbing in this place dates back from the ancient times, when the inhabitants of ancient Aeginio found shelter here, in order to avoid attacks from bandits. Even Athanasios Meteoritis, the monk who was the founder of Megalo (Great) Meteoro, and as a consequence the founder of this monastic community, can be considered a climber. Greece. Meteora. The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen. The Holy Monastery of St. Stephen was built in the 16th century and decorated in 1545. This monastery rests on the plain rather than on a cliff. It was damaged by the Nazis during WWII who believed it was harboring insurgents and was abandoned.
