Gargoyles have guarded Paris since ancient times. During the day, they look at the city from Notre Dame, and at night, as one legend says, they leave their home and fly in the sky. There is also a legend that says that the gargoyle is a dragon-like snake, which lived in France, in the Seine River. She spewed water with great force, overturned fishing boats and flooded houses. Scientists believe that the gargoyles acting as drainpipes are just architectural fantasy inspired by dark medieval traditions. Be that as it may, the gargoyles have been watching Paris for many years and know all its secrets. Oil, canvas. Signed. Varnished.

Just outside of Notre Dame Cathedral embedded in the concrete of the public square is a small geographic marker from which the distance from Paris to all other places are judged. Paris Point Zero marks the supposedly exact center of the city or country, and all other locations are thought to be measured as a distance radiating from this point. It is marked by an octagonal brass plate that is set into the concrete of the square. With the marker's very low profile, and the millions of people congregating in the square everyday, some tourists (like myself) have a hard time even finding it. It is believed that before the arrival of Christianity in France, a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter stood on the site of Notre-Dame. Evidence for this includes the Pillar of the Boatmen, discovered beneath the cathedral in 1710.
