A spectacular scenic vista awaits your exploration at the end of the North Unit Scenic Drive. Explore interpretive waysides along a short accessible sidewalk and take in the views of the meandering Little Missouri River surrounded by tall cottonwood trees and impressive buttes. Aptly named, Oxbow Overlook represents a type of meander that is occurring in the river. Oxbows and oxbow lakes are common along this free-flowing river where natural flood cycles constantly shift the river's course. Be sure to look for wildlife amongst the surrounding buttes.

We were on the road to Capitol Reef National Park, travelling north along UT-95, following an almost dried-up river whose course was defined by a long series of oxbow formations or U-bends, While not on the scale of the Horseshoe Bend near Page, Arizona, this horseshoe bend otherwise had all of the characteristics of that big brother.

Close to my home is an oxbow formation, known as the Coves, that shows the course of the local river before the river changed course. That change of course is quite recent, certainly within the time that the area has been settled. Today, the old river course is a haven for flora and fauna within the city limits. This image, captured on a warm August day, shows the stream that still exists and the wetlands that surround it. Everything is abundantly alive and so lovely to walk through.
