Royal Tapestry

Description: The Royal Typewriter Company was founded by Edward B. Hess and Lewis C. Myers in January 1904 in a machine shop in Brooklyn, New York. In 1905, with their limited cash running out, Hess and Myers turned to Thomas Fortune Ryan, the wealthy financier. They demonstrated their machine which had numerous innovations including: friction-free, ball-bearing, one-track rail to support the weight of the carriage, a new paper feed, a lighter and faster typebar action, and complete visibility of the words as they are typed. Ryan was impressed and put up $220,000 in exchange for financial control. In March 1906 the first Royal typewriter, the Royal Standard, was sold.

Description: he company originated in 1886, when the Smith Premier Typewriter Company was established by Lyman C. Smith and his brothers Wilbert, Monroe, and Hurlbut.[2][3] The typewriter was the first to use a double keyboard, but it was not the first typewriter that typed both upper and lower case characters; that honor belonged to the Remington #2 that was introduced in 1877–78, a decade before the first model of the Smith Premier was placed on the market. The advertisements boasted that there was "a key for every character! In 1889, the Smith-Premier, the first typewriter to bear the Smith name, was manufactured in Lyman C. Smith's gun factory on South Clinton Street in Syracuse, New York. Alexander T. Brown, an employee, invented the machine.

Teralba Typewriter Cafe Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Welcome to the Teralba Typewriter Cafe, the completely fictional coffee shop where every table has a typewriter and every customer is three strong coffees away from beginning a novel they’ll never finish. Order a pastry, feed in a sheet of paper and hammer out a love letter, an anonymous confession or a sternly worded complaint about the disappearance of carbon paper. Fun fact: the familiar QWERTY keyboard layout first appeared on typewriters during the 1870s and is still tapping away on modern computers and phones today.

Etaoin shrdlu / Typesetter Word Design Tapestry
Main Tag:

Description: Etaoin shrdlu is a nonsense phrase that sometimes appeared in print accidentally in the days of "hot type" publishing because of a custom of type-casting machine operators to fill out and discard lines of type when an error was made. It appeared often enough to become part of newspaper lore - a documentary about the last issue of The New York Times composed using hot metal (2 July 1978) was titled Farewell, Etaoin Shrdlu - and "etaoin shrdlu" is listed in the Oxford English Dictionary and in the Random House Webster's Unabridged Dictionary.
