Rain Bows Tapestries

Dripping paint here looking like heavy rain. We say that boring moments or activities in life are like "watching paint dry".. but paint can be and is exciting. Colour in the hands of skilled artists often is exciting to watch something being created before or eyes.

As we are taught at school ...EACH rainbow has 7 visible colours: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. BUT is that true? Well NO... Issac Newton did a great deal of pioneering work on light and summarised the effect of white light being split into colours at the familier red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, But this is only a SUMMARY. There are millions of colours that our eyes can detect, more colours than we can put a name to, and so the rainbow "7" are bands of similar colours.

I love to look at rainbows with childlike pleasure. Similarly with shafts of light that stream through intricate stained-glass or a busy artists palette. It lifts the soul. After the gloom, comes light. After the storm, comes brightness again. Also in life.

Though the words “stained glass art” may trigger thoughts of medieval cathedral windows, today’s contemporary artists are proving that the thousand-year-old craft is anything but outdated. Inspired by the stained glass of the Middle Ages, many of today’s contemporary artists put a modern twist on medieval techniques are are free to exploit the full colour range in 2D and 3D art works, that transform entire environments with dazzling, abstract beams of light and colour.

Colours are exciting and when sitting next to other colours becomes more interesting and exciting as the possible combinations for MIXING become infinite. YELLOW + RED gives ORANGE but we can create millions of shades from 2 colours and infinite shades with 4,5,6 or 7 colours. The possibilities are endless.

Looking through patterned glass has been an obsession for me. Such glass can distort the thing behind the glass and even hide some of the obvious features that gives identity to an object. It asks the question ... "what do you see?". In fact it is my car. My blue car. My Citroen PICASSO blue car. Perhaps this tells you quite a lot about me.
