Description: Denver's Colorado Mine Company was one of those places that wasn’t what it seemed. It was a dive bar of sorts, but slightly classier and wrapped in a unique style of western kitsch with a menu to match. It was the kind of place your mother had warned you about, but that only made it that much more fun to hang out there. The restaurant lives on in America's collective consciousness as the creator of the "Fool's Gold" sandwich, one of Elvis Presley's all-time favorites, so much so that he would fly his private jet from Graceland to Denver just to get his fix.
Description: A companion piece to my other works "Mermaid Party Yacht" & "Mermaid Hair Salon", containing many of the same characters. Can you spot them all? All three scenes are from my book “Where’s the Mermaid? - A Mermazing Search-and-Find Adventure”. See more at: www.wheresthemermaid.com
Description: After spending the last 25 years entombed beneath a dull drop ceiling and the beigest of beige drywall, Santa Monica’s vintage 1959 Penguin coffee shop is being restored to its Googie glory. The jaunty-roofed dining room was designed by architects Armet & Davis (you know their work from Norms, Pann’s, and Johnie’s on Wilshire) and served up burgers and malts for generations before the building became a dentist’s office in 1991.

Description: The Dog Houses comprised a chain of very small restaurants around L.A., often on a piece of land that also held a large car wash. I’m going to guess that was the idea. Someone said, “Hey, let’s design a little restaurant that can fit in a spot that doesn’t seem big enough for a restaurant and where people have to wait around for their car to be washed.” And then someone else said, “Uh, like a hot dog stand?” And the first person said, “Kind of…but let’s make it a little more upscale so we’ll get the business of folks who think they’re too good to eat at a hot dog stand.”around the corner from world famous Pink’s.

Description: This pre-tiki establishment was open at least as early as 1945. Before this, in 1943, it was home to the Rose Bowl. Hy Ginnis, the original host, died in 1955. Art Adler took over soon after. It was located on Chicago's Rush Street which was quite notorious at the time for gambling, prostitution, and all sorts of debauchery. The exterior was marked by huge neon vertical letters spelling out "TRADE WINDS". By the 1960s, this location housed the Whiskey A Go Go.
Description: Mambo's Restaurant and Rooftop Bar Bourbon Street by Debra Martz I enjoyed an early morning walk on Bourbon Street and other French Quarter Streets nearby while there were no crowds. While on this stroll, I took pictures of my favorite signs and several are places I actually went to later. AND, Mambo's served up some great gumbo and char-grilled oysters! YUM! In Topaz software, I used several filters to make the image more colorful. ©Debra Martz, All Rights Reserved
