Description: The process of canonization for St Bakhita was initiated by Pope John XXIII in 1959, in 1978, Pope John Paul II declared her Venerabilis, the first step towards canonization. In 1992, she was declared Blessed and given Feb 8 as her feast day. In 2000, she was canonized and became Saint Josephine Bakhita. She is venerated as a modern African saint, and adopted as the only patron saint of Sudan. Her legacy is that transformation is possible through suffering.
