Scolopendra cataracta is a giant centipede, growing to around 200 mm (7.9 in) in length; it has long legs and a greenish-black colour. When exposed, it escapes into water. It both runs along stream beds and swims with eel-like horizontal undulations of its body. Out of water, water rolls off the centipede's body leaving it dry as the surface is hydrophobic.

They have an elongated body and a flattened back. They have on their heads a pair of long antennae, a pair of mandibles and two pairs of jaws. Centipedes are terrestrial animals, solitary and carnivorous, feeding mainly on earthworms, worms, crickets, cockroaches, etc.. Insect with nocturnal habits, they are very active, quickly running in search of their prey, which is detected, and often immobilized, through the inoculation of the venom. They lodge under rocks, tree bark, leaves on the ground, decaying trunks. In residential areas they are found in gardens, debris, pots, tree fern ferns, under bricks and they like to stay in any part of the house that does not receive sunlight and is damp.
