Description: This depiction of Sekhmet comes from an Ancient Egyptian menat counterweight. A menat was a type of heavily beaded ritual necklace and the Sekhmet image was used as a counterweight on the back. There are representations of women holding the necklace, possibly shaking them to make noise, during ceremonies honoring the goddess. Here you can see Sekhmet represented as a lion-headed goddess figure. I've recreated this depiction of Sekhmet in my own style based off a menat counterweight located in the Met.

She is depicted as a mighty lioness, the fiercest hunter known to the Egyptians. When Lower Egypt was conquered by Upper Egypt, Sekhmet was seen as the more powerful of the two warrior goddesses, the other, Bast, have been the protector of Lower Egypt. It was Sekhmet who would eventually be seen as the Avenger of Wrongs, and the Scarlet Lady.

The story tells, she was so angry with the enemies of the Pharaon that she started to killed them all, but after a while her thirst was unstoppable. That's why Ra, fearing she will end with humanity, put a jar of beer and pomegranate juice near her while she was sleep. When she woke up, thinking it was blood, she drank the whole jar, she became so drunk that her heart became soft and then fill with love, transforming her rage to love for humankind.
