Springfield Ohio Tapestries
Description: Former President Donald Trump plans to visit Springfield, Ohio, "soon," a source familiar with the planning said. The town has become the center of a national political fight on immigration, with Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio, spreading baseless conspiracy theories that Haitian immigrants in Springfield are eating dogs and other pets. Though the unfounded claims have circulated online in right-wing circles for weeks, they went mainstream last week when Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris met for a debate in Philadelphia.
Description: During the September 10 presidential debate, Donald Trump promoted a baseless rumor that Haitian migrants living in Springfield, Ohio were stealing and eating people’s pets. The rumor had gone viral in conservative media in the days preceding the debate, in no small part because Trump’s running mate, Ohio senator J.D. Vance, had been personally amplifying it. Since the debate, Trump and Vance have continued to promote the falsehood, as well as other racist and xenophobic claims about the migrant community, for political gain. Below is what we know about the pet-eating claims and how Trump and Vance’s lies have unraveled.

Description: The Red Barn restaurant was a fast-food restaurant chain founded in 1961 in Springfield, Ohio. Originally, the Red Barn restaurants were in the shape of barns with a glass front and limited seating, while later buildings had the familiar fast-food style mansard roof which allowed them to comply to more local building codes. They were known for their signature "Big Barney" and "Barnbuster" burgers and the chain was quite forward-looking with their menu and were actually the first chain to have self-service salad bars. At its peak, Red Barn had 300–400 restaurants in 19 states, as well as outlets in southern Ontario, elsewhere in Canada, and Australia.
