The wild horses of Assateague Island are free to roam and do as they please. Here we see one of the Assateague ponies appearing to enjoy a splash of sunshine at the edge of the forest.

I witnessed a beautiful moment of friendship today between these two gorgeous chestnut horses whilst driving down an old farm road one beautiful summer evening a few years ago. Were they mother and child; siblings; or simply stablemates without shared blood? It didn't matter what their relationship to each other was. The importance was the now of the moment. Not even a nicker did I hear pass between them; the simple act of touching spoke volumes for both. It said, "I am home."

Assateague Island is located on the Eastern Shore stretching between Maryland and Virginia. This horse was painted from dark to light with watercolors. Materials used: Da Vinci Watercolor paints on cold pressed Arches paper.
