Carl J. Subler of Versailles, Ohio purchased his first truck in 1933 at the age of 18 and began hauling grain to Southeast Ohio and back hauling coal to Darke County. Carl would soon begin adding more trucks and hiring drivers to run them, and before he knew it, he was running a trucking company. Carl Subler Trucking wasn't formally incorporated until 1954, but would grow into the 10th largest truckload carrier in the U.S.A., operating in all lower 48 states with over 600 trucks. Carl Subler Trucking, Inc. ran well into the '80s until they were purchased by A-P-A Transport Corp. in 1986. A-P-A slowly rebranded the Subler fleet, and they themselves closed down in 2002.

With their primary route being I-5 between SoCal and NorCal, and serving major cities in between, CME really did 'carry California.'

Big Truck Lovers

Harvey Jones started a business hauling dry freight between Springdale, Rogers, and Fayetteville, Arkansas with two mules and a wagon in 1918. Jones bought his first truck in 1919, and when the M&NA railroad went on strike in 1920, Jones Truck Lines (JTL) began hauling freight between Seligman, Missouri, and Eureka Springs – a route that would have been served by rail. As the strike wore on for years, it was a catalyst for JTL's rapid growth, adding more trucks and routes. Post-war saw JTL buying up smaller lines, making them the largest privately owned carrier in the country in the '50s. As of 1990, JTL had 133 terminals in 23 states throughout the Midwest and South, with 3,300 employees and revenues of $240 million.

Truckers need to make runs to get paid, so they go from moon to moon on runs. They get in their house on wheels and boogie on down the road.

Motor Freight Corporation (MFC) was started in 1926 by Harry Adams with one truck operating between Terre Haute and Brazil, Indiana. About a year later another truck was added and service was extended to Bloomington and Bedford and a little later to Indianapolis. Adams would proceed to buy up smaller truck lines year over year until the '60s when MFC was operating terminals in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, and Tennessee, and maintaining ICC operating authority on multiple routes. Increasing public interest in deregulation of the trucking industry in the early '70s had Adams seeing the writing on the wall, and he looked for a buyer for MFC, finding one in Branch Motor Express out of Pennsylvania.

Lee Way Motor Freight was founded by Robert “Whitt” Lee in 1934 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Lee Way grew quickly, adding drivers and equipment, all while developing a reputation for safety and reliability. By 1947, the company had 225 pieces of equipment and added routes in Kansas and Missouri. That year, the company acquired another trucking company that expanded its fleet and operating authority, an expansion strategy Lee Way would follow for decades into the future. By 1975, Lee's sons decided to sell the company and by the time deregulation hit, Lee Way was in a downward spiral. Lee Way had expanded to 5,000 employees and 100 terminals in 25 states by 1984,but Lee Way's then owner, Commercial Lovelace, elected to shutter the line.

Viking Freight System got their start in January 1966 as Viking Delivery Service based in San Jose, California. Their first customer was Pacific Telephone, and the cargo was computer punch cards that contained the daily phone number changes. These cards had to be delivered to 13 phone company offices at night so that updated information would be available the next day. By 1973 the company had grown to a large fleet of 27' van and flatbed trailers for both local and line haul routes as annual revenues reached $2.8 million. By 1981, Viking was the largest interstate carrier in California, with annual revenues of $48.0 million. Viking's success would eventually be their undoing as they were purchased by a worldwide carrier.

Starting out as Branch Storage Company in Perkasie, Pennsylvania in 1920, and went into the freight business as Branch Motor Express Company in 1923. It did not take long for the company to make its mark in moving freight, and applied for intrastate certificate of authority on several key routes within Pennsylvania. With two decades of building their intrastate business, Branch applied and received interstate authority from the ICC in 1944, relocated their headquarters to New York City, and began running between key manufacturing regions throughout the East Coast. Billing themselves as "The Main Stem of The Industrial East," Branch was a key player in manufacturing, moving both raw materials and finished goods throughout their network.
