Description: Eugene Grasset, (1845 – 1917) a Swiss decorative artist, teacher and theorist. In 1896 he published 'Plants and Their Application to Ornament'. The artwork drawn by his students, is an intriguing visual book on the use of plants as the inspiration for decorative patterns which are an abstracted version of the original plant. These patterns he thought could potentially be used on household items common to that era. Grasset was influenced by another great pattern maker, William Morris, who died the year he published his book. In turn Grasset had an influence on the style of Art Nouveau, the emerging movement at that time.
