In this case is from Mercury, and in the germanic/Nordic equivalent is Woden or better known as Odin It is said that is depiction is what inspired wizards and he always walk arround with is two crows Huginn and Muninn (Though and Memory) and he had to sacrifice his right eye in exhange for wisdom. Seems like there is this association because both Mercury and Odin seem to guide souls afterlife
