Description: Reproduction graphics insignia for the Office of Civilian Defense (aka civil defense), as created in 1941 to co-ordinate state and federal measures for the protection of civilians in case of war emergency. Civilan Defense was responsible for supervising protective functions such as blackouts and fire protection, as well as war service functions such as child care, health, housing and transportation. The Office of Civilian Defense would become the Office of Civil Defense at the end of the war and would retain the iconic CD insignia.

These superheroes embodied the ideal virtues of American soldiers and demonstrated the courage and resolve needed to fight evil during World War II, things that went hand-in-hand with comic book storytelling. Americans had little interest in another war in Europe and what was initially an isolationist stance, eventually morphed into patriotic rallying cries as America was drawn into the war, and the comics went right along with them as superheroes jumped into the fray, battling the axis of evil.
