Description: The Salton Sea is the largest lake in California by surface area, and its very existence is a total accident. In 1905, flooding caused the Colorado River to spill over the man-made irrigation canals to pour into what was then known as the Salton Sink – a 40-mile-long dry desert basin. It took two years to stop the flooding, during which the Salton Sink had filled up and formed the Salton Sea. it didn’t take long before people began flocking to this desert oasis as a weekend getaway to picnic and play in the lake. While smaller settlements had popped up over the years, Salton City was established in 1958 and the town’s population quickly grew to 15,000 people, with thousands more arriving on the weekends.

Description: In 1982 the Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital (or 곤지암 정신병원 / Gonjiam Namyang Neuropsychiatric Hospital) was established outside Gyeonggi-do, South Korea by a Mr Hong. The original building was just over 11,000m and spread across three floors. Sometime during the early 1990s, an additional two buildings were added, which increased the size by another 500m. A short time later in July 1996 the hospital closed and was left abandoned and unmaintained for over two decades. Nefarious rumours began to spread about the hospital’s closure and ghost hunters and urban explorers began flocking to the spooky site in droves. Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital quickly gained a reputation as one of the top three haunted buildings in South Korea.

Description: Hashima Island (端島, or simply Hashima, as -shima is a Japanese suffix for island), commonly called Gunkanjima (軍艦島, meaning Battleship Island), is a tiny abandoned island off Nagasaki, lying about 15 kilometres (8 nautical miles) from the centre of the city. It is one of 505 uninhabited islands in Nagasaki Prefecture. The island's most notable features are its abandoned concrete buildings, undisturbed except by nature, and the surrounding sea wall. While the island is a symbol of the rapid industrialization of Japan, it is also a reminder of Japanese war crimes as a site of forced labour prior to and during the Second World War.
