Description: Ancient Greek symbol meander. were among the most important symbols in ancient Greece; and perhaps symbolized infinity and unity; many ancient Greek temples incorporated the sign of the meander. A meander or meandros is a decorative border constructed from a continuous line, shaped into a repeated motif. Such a design is also called the Greek fret or Greek key design, although these are modern designations.
Description: This design originally came from an engraving by Hendrick Goltzius in 1588, which I have restored, redrawn, and digitized. The text reads: "NON AMBIRE PROBAT SAPIENS, SED LAVDAT HONORES, LAVDA CONTINGANT SI TAMEN ILLA PROBIS. SIC PHAETONTAEVS NIMIVM TEMERARIA LAPSVS VOTA DOCET TANDEN FINE CARERE BONO." Which roughly translates to: "The wise man demonstrates that he does not search for but appreciates the honors. And recognizes if happens to honest.
