Description: This is an image of one of the aisles running adjacent to the nave within the ruins of Fountains Abbey, near Ripon in North Yorkshire, England. The abbey was founded in the 12th century and destroyed by Henry VIII in the 16th. Today, the ruins are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in England as a grade 1 listed property, which recognises the ruins as one of the most significant of its type in Europe. That all said, the ruins are captivating. I understand that Henry VIII's forces removed the roof to the let the elements take their toll on the interior. The walls are essentially intact, so the grace of the place is still so evident. the wide nave, the aisles, the tower, the now vacant windows, and the sense of solemnity.
