Retina cells. Fluorescent light micrograph of cells in the retina, the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eyeball. A blood vessel runs from left to right, and numerous other branches are seen. The tissue has been tagged with fluorescent markers specific to certain proteins. The green marks actin filaments that ensheath the vessel and help modulate blood flow by constriction and relaxation. Red marks for red blood cells. Magnification: x200 when printed 10 cm wide.

Retina blood vessels and nerve cells. Confocal light micrograph of the retina, the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eyeball. The tissue has been fluorescently stained. Ganglion cells (orange) receive visual information from photoreceptors beneath this surface, which is relayed to the brain by optic nerve fibres (red). Glial cells (green) offer structural support to the nerve cells. Blood vessels (blue) form branching networks across the retina to supply it with oxygen and nutrients. Kidney glomeruli, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The cells that usually surround the glomeruli have been removed to reveal the coiled capillaries at the core of the glomeruli. The function of the glomeruli is to filter waste products from the blood. After the reabsorption of certain substances elsewhere in the kidney, the liquid is transported to the bladder as urine.

Abdominal arteries. Coloured angiogram of the arteries of the abdomen. The aorta runs down the centre of the image, it is the main artery of the body. It carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body. At top right is the splenic artery, which carries blood to the spleen. The next branch from the aorta, at left, is the hepatic artery, which serves the liver. At centre the two renal arteries (right and left) branch from the aorta and carry blood to the kidneys (blue). At the bottom of the image the aorta divides into the two iliac arteries, which serve the legs. Angiography uses an injected contrast medium to show blood vessels on an X-ray.

Normal retina, ophthalmoscope image. The retina is the light-sensitive membrane that lines the back of the eye. Blood vessels (red) radiate out from the optic disc (yellow, left). The optic disc is the area where the optic nerve and blood vessels enter the eye. Due to this, it has no light- sensitive cells, and is the cause of the blind spot. The dark red area at centre is the macula. This is the region of the retina with the highest concentration of light-sensitive cells, and is responsible for the sharp vision at the centre of the visual field.

Body imaging. Composite image of several methods used to visualise the anatomy of the human body. The techniques seen here are magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-rays (radiography), dissection and artworks. MRI scanning (showing part of the brain, yellow) uses radio waves and a powerful magnet to obtain slice images through the human body. X-rays (like the skull and pelvis) reveal body tissues by their differing transmission of X-rays. X-ray angiography (like the kidneys, white and yellow, above pelvis) uses a contrast medium to highlight blood vessels. These techniques are used to diagnose medical disorders. A thigh (left, brown) has been dissected in vertical section.

This is my acrylic abstract painting of a flow of capillaries. I blew bubbles on the paper to create the special effects.
