Castillo Pillows
Description: The rivalry between Ruben Olivares and Jesus Castillo—one of the most revered in Mexican boxing lore—took place in an era when the bantamweight division was dominated by Mexicans, with the great “El Púas” and Chucho being the best of the bunch. Their first bout, which took place a mere six months before the rematch, saw Ruben defend his bantamweight crown in an all-action fight against a determined Castillo who in the end came up short on the scorecards. For this reason, as well as for the contrast in personalities and the melding of their fighting styles, their rematch at The Inglewood Forum in Los Angeles was highly anticipated. Thankfully, it did not fail to live up to fans’ lofty expectations.
Description: On Friday, 19th April 1985, the Forum in Inglewood, California hosted the WBC World Super-featherweight title match between the champion, Julio Cesar Chavez and seasoned challenger, Ruben Castillo. The event was promoted by Don King Productions. Chavez, originally from Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico, was making his first defense of the WBC title that he had won against Mario Martinez the previous September. Chavez was known for his aggressive fighting style and body punching.
Description: On April 12, 1980, at the Civic Auditorium in Tucson, Arizona, Salvador Sánchez defended his WBC featherweight title against Ruben Castillo. Sánchez, with a record of 34-1-1, weighed in at 126 pounds, while Castillo, standing at 44-1-0, tipped the scales at 125½ pounds.
