Hotel de Ville in Paris (the Paris City Hall) is a very large building housing the city's local administrative affairs. It used to be called Place de Grève. The building has the location of the municipality of Paris since 1357. It serves multiple functions, housing the local administration, the Mayor of Paris (since 1977). It also serves as a venue for large receptions. Since its construction, the building played a key role in several political events and has been the scene of a number of historical events (for example, the proclamation of the French Third Republic in 1870 and the famous speech by Charles de Gaulle on 25 August 1944 during the Liberation of Paris when he greeted the crowd from a front window). This images is one of a few showing some of the details adorning the façade of the Hotel de Ville (city hall) in downtown Paris. This specific section is a small part of the main tower on top of the building (the clock tower) which reads Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, which is the national motto of France and the Republic of Haiti. Although this slogan finds its origins in the French Revolution, it was not institutionalized until the Third Republic at the end of the 19th century. I was in New York a couple of years ago and I was lucky enough to see Miike Snow at Radio City Music Hall. While we queued, this was the view I had of the venue. I took a photo then and only recently rediscovered it. Turning it into an artwork seemed sensible.

Antoine-Laurent de Lavoisier was a French nobleman and chemist central to the 18th-century chemical revolution and had a large influence on both the history of chemistry and the history of biology.
