Description: The state was named after the Colorado River by Spanish explorers. US Army officer and amateur explorer Zebulon Pike was recruited by the United States government in 1806 to locate the source of the Mississippi River and to check out Spanish settlements in New Mexico. Even though his recorded location for the source of the Mississippi was extremely inaccurate and allegedly got lost in his expedition, he did explore much of what would become the American Southwest. When he reached what is now Colorado Springs, he named a mountain after himself, Pikes Peak, which remains a symbol for the city as well as the state to this day.
Description: Rocky Mountain High is a 1972 folk song about the serenity found in the Rocky Mountains. The song was controversial when the FCC was permitted by a legal ruling to censor music deemed to promote drug abuse. Numerous radio stations cautiously banned it until the son'g author explained that the "high" was an innocent description of the sense of peace he found in the Rockies. Of course, that doesn't stop recreational drug users still maintaining an association with the song, one that was only reinforced when Colorado legalized marijuana in 2012. Regardless of what your high is, you can't beat experiencing the Rockies from Colorado, home to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as the range's highest peak, Mount Elbert, at 14,440 ft.
Description: A silhouette of Bigfoot with the Colorado state flag draped over its shoulders is depicted. The creature holds a walking stick and is ascending a rocky incline. Behind Bigfoot, a series of stylized, orange-hued mountain peaks are shown against a black sky, with sun rays emanating from behind the mountains. Pine trees are visible in the foreground.
