Description: This is an image of just a small portion of the ruins of Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, England. The abbey, judging by what remains, must have been a remarkable structure. Its Norman heritage is evident in the round arches, and the now empty openings would presumably housed splendid windows. All gone now as the abbey was a victim, in 1539, of the 'Dissolution of the Abbeys' a decree by Henry VIII, which left it without a roof so that the weather could take its toll. That ruination was compounded by a further pillaging of the stones, with the nearby Fountains Hall apparently being a beneficiary. Today, the ruins are in the care of the National Trust and have been designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

While the cathedral has its roots in the 12th century, it seems that it went through many iterations over the next 400 years. Description: This is an image of the painted ceiling above the Southwest Transept within Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire , England. Built in the 12th century, it had a matching transept on the northwest corner, which alas collapsed due to subsidence. Nevertheless, this remaining transept, abutting the West Tower, exhibits a variety of styles. Although the walls of the transept are not uniform in style, on the whole they are a delight to witness.
Description: This is an image, in part, of the ruins of the priory on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which is off the northwest coast of England. The island is tidal and connected to the mainland by a causeway, which floods twice a day. The ruins date from the establishment of the priory by the Normans, following the "Conquest", but the site had previously been that of a monastery with a history that goes back to the mid-7th century. The original monastery was destroyed during the Viking raids. The stone arches and walls are all that remains of the old priory, but these ruins hint at the grand architecture from that bygone era.

We came across this church when exploring the town, where its medieval centre is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the church itself a National Cultural Monument in Czechia. This late medieval church features a superb vaulted ceiling, sitting atop gothic arches, with all supported by tall, stone columns. The tall stained glass windows provide abundant daylight, which gives this lofty space a lovely airy feeling. What I love about this image is how the interior lent itself to be captured in this ultra wide-angle shot, with the converging verticals creating a very dynamic image. Anyway, I hope you like it.
