Description: This is an image of the painted ceiling above the Southwest Transept within Ely Cathedral, Cambridgeshire , England. Built in the 12th century, it had a matching transept on the northwest corner, which alas collapsed due to subsidence. Nevertheless, this remaining transept, abutting the West Tower, exhibits a variety of styles. Although the walls of the transept are not uniform in style, on the whole they are a delight to witness.
Description: This is an image, in part, of the ruins of the priory on Lindisfarne (Holy Island), which is off the northwest coast of England. The island is tidal and connected to the mainland by a causeway, which floods twice a day. The ruins date from the establishment of the priory by the Normans, following the "Conquest", but the site had previously been that of a monastery with a history that goes back to the mid-7th century. The original monastery was destroyed during the Viking raids. The stone arches and walls are all that remains of the old priory, but these ruins hint at the grand architecture from that bygone era.

Description: This image portrays the wonderful interior space of the St. Vitus Church in Cesky Krumlov, Czechia. We came across this church when exploring the town, where its medieval centre is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the church itself a National Cultural Monument in Czechia. This late medieval church features a superb vaulted ceiling, sitting atop gothic arches, with all supported by tall, stone columns. The tall stained glass windows provide abundant daylight, which gives this lofty space a lovely airy feeling. What I love about this image is how the interior lent itself to be captured in this ultra wide-angle shot, with the converging verticals creating a very dynamic image. Anyway, I hope you like it.

The abbey was founded in the mid-12th century, but fell foul of Henry VIII's "Dissolution of the Monasteries" decree in 1539, which sought to seize the wealth of the religious houses. That's history, but what now remains is a remarkable testament to the people who built the abbey. Apparently, the dissolution robbed the abbey of its roof, leaving the elements to destroy the interior. However, the walls remain largely intact where the columns, arches, and window spaces clearly outline what must have been a spectacular, but solemn, place. What I love about the image is the combination of symmetry, and perspective., and green, blue and orange.
Description: This is an image of the 'Cellarium' at Fountains Abbey, in North Yorkshire, England. As I understand it, this large space was used to store the harvest yield. While much of Fountains Abbey was destroyed during the King Henry VIII-ordered dissolution of the monasteries, this extraordinary structure survived. What I love about this image is the light from the open windows and how it illuminates the truly amazing vaulted ceiling. Considering that this place was essentially a barn, it was built with such lasting care.

Description: This is an image of the ceiling of the Assembly Room within the Buxton Crescent. We were wandering around Buxton when it was mentioned to us that the room was going to be open to the public that morning. It was quite something to see, and not something that is normally openly available as it is a function space within a hotel. It would seem that the room was originally a ballroom when Buxton Crescent, a crescent shaped building in planform, was built in the early 1700s. It would have been a place for entertainment for wealthy visitors who were there to 'take the waters' at the spa. History aside, the room is spectacular. I do hope you enjoy the image.

This image showcases the vaulted ceiling above the nave. To its sides gothic arches rise from the floor with clerestory windows above to provide abundant illumination. What I love about this image is the perfect symmetry with only the varying tones in the stonework to differentiate one side from the other. You have to give it to them, the people who built such a beautiful structure, they really understood their geometry and how to reproduce it in stone. Wow!
Description: I have a love of medieval cathedrals; they speak so natively to the deep faith of the people who laboured so long ago to create such spectacular places of worship. Peterborough Cathedral, in England, is such a place. This image is of the incredible fan-vaulted ceiling of the "New Building" that was added beyond the apse during the early 1500s. I understand that as an architectural style, fan-vaulting was an English style, which emerged during the 14th century. It is quite something. What I love about this image is the strong converging verticals leading up to the conoidal fans, and the delicate illumination from lead-lighted windows on the limestone vaults. You gotta love it!
