I made this design when i had just moved to the Isle of Man. It was the peak of summer, so there was flowers a bloom at every turn, Wild Crocosmia grows on almost every cliff and verge. It looks far too tropical to be native to the British Isles!

One of the big colours of summer here is the wild crocosmia that escaped from Victorian gardens. Swathes of orange litter the countryside as it spreads like wildfire.

The vibrant orange montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) is a hallmark of high summer here in the West of Ireland, growing in gardens and along roadside verges and embankments. Due to our mild winters here in the West they became naturalized and had become frequent in the countryside by the 1930s. This image is based on a photograph of a Montbretia against a sky background, taken along my road into the village and rendered in the style of a watercolor painting.

I can't imagine the countryside here without the showy montbretia (Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora) . It is a hybrid, created in 1879 by French nurseryman, Victor Lemoine, who crossed two South African species, C. aurea and C. pottsii. Due to our mild winters here in the West they became naturalized and had become frequent in the countryside by the 1930s. This photo however is of a non-naturalized cultivar planted in one of my neighbours' garden It is somewhat darker than the bright orange naturalized hybrid. I gave it extra texture with a photo of a stone surface of a cottage nearby. (Canon EOS 60D DSLR, Corel PSP X)

Crocosmia that were growing by the methodist church in Rainier, Oregon. They sure where pretty. Blossoming along elegant twig-like stems, these coral colored five petaled blooms are surrounded by an energetic splash of energy while they soak up the radiant, but peaceful, sunlight.
