The instruction from the top was to add extra Mustang DNA and the more aggressive new look was achieved thanks to the ‘power bulge’ and larger bonnet nostrils, plus the split honeycomb front grille that used moulded plastics rather than chrome strips for the first time, a precursor to the age of lightweight plastics. Larger wraparound tail-lights and a slightly altered bumper were the only rear end improvements. The XB was also the swan song of the GT; the nameplate would not return until the EB GT was released in 1992 to mark the GT’s 25th anniversary.

Description: The XB series bore minor cosmetic differences to the preceding model, the XA, aimed at giving the car a more muscular stance. First time equipment offerings included standard front disc brakes on all models and an available carpeted interior. Launched in September 1973, the XB GT was to be the last Falcon GT for almost 20 years, until the 25th Anniversary EBII GT in October 1992. The XB GT received a new aggressive front end with a twin nostril bonnet, similar to the style found on the '71-'73 Mach 1 Mustang. Description: Introduced in 1982, the XE was a revised version of the XD Falcon. Its external differences were restricted to a new nose, new rear bumper, and taillights, along with new full wheel covers for the Fairmont, and 15 in alloy wheels for the Fairmont Ghia. Significant mechanical changes included revised six-cylinder engines with two-stage carburettors or optional electronic fuel injection, an optional five-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and the introduction of a new rear suspension system incorporating progressive rate coil springs, four trailing arms and Watt's linkage on all sedans. Description: Stylistically, the XD was strongly influenced by the European Ford Granada Mark II of 1977. The only common components shared between the Granada and the Falcon however were the headlights. The one-piece lift-up tailgate for the Falcon station wagon, the first seen on a locally-developed station wagon, was taken directly from the American Ford Fairmont.
