Inspired by weathered fallout shelter signs of the 1960s, the battered yellow-and-black design evokes forgotten buildings, obsolete infrastructure, roadside discoveries, and relics that quietly survived their era. Made for Cold War history enthusiasts, urban explorers, photographers, preservationists, vintage sign collectors, and anyone fascinated by remnants of the recent past. Sometimes the best way to find history is simply to notice what everyone else has stopped seeing.
Description: In 1956, American Civil Defense efforts focused on preparing the civilian population for potential nuclear attack during the Cold War, with a mix of public education, drills, and the development of warning systems. A key aspect was the "Operation Alert" exercise, a nationwide drill simulating an attack, and the "Duck and Cover" campaign aimed at educating the public on safety measures. And that same year, a mascot was added, the aptly named Mr. Civil Defense. He was featured on signs, posters, training materials, and comic books to help prepare the population for the worst with his catchphrase, "alert today, alive tomorrow!"
Description: George McKelvey (winner of the National Sonny Bono Look-A-Like contest, 1965, 1966 and 1968) sings a lovely scopitone ballad about a guy and his girlfriend who have a fight and he ends up in a fallout shelter and the girlfriend doesn't. It's a protest song... that you can dance to! A retro design; so far as I know there was never a table tent for scopitone S-1046. Scopitones are music films made for a video jukebox in the 1960s. There were over 70 American ones produced and hundreds of European ones, featuring well-known artists of the time. George McKelvey was known more for his comedy than his singing talents.
Description: Reproduction graphics insignia for the Office of Civilian Defense (aka civil defense), as created in 1941 to co-ordinate state and federal measures for the protection of civilians in case of war emergency. Civilan Defense was responsible for supervising protective functions such as blackouts and fire protection, as well as war service functions such as child care, health, housing and transportation. The Office of Civilian Defense would become the Office of Civil Defense at the end of the war and would retain the iconic CD insignia.
