Ground Up Pillows

I found a colony of these Tongue Orchids (Cryptostylis Subulata) back in the Winter. I kept checking them every month or so until they put up flower stems. After that I visited every week - weather permitting - until in mid December - they flowered. Their exotic beauty was worth waiting for!

This is a Green Comb Spider Orchid (Caladenia Dilatata) - and is the best specimen of this species I've seen! They are usually a bit bedraggled. These are a relatively uncommon Spring Orchid in Southern Australia.

It was a nice sunny day day in mid-Winter. I had to get out of the office and enjoy the sunshine, so I walked the orchid trail at Baluk Willam Reserve in Victoria, Australia. I really didn't expect to find anything - until I came across this glorious - and very early - Cobra Greenhood Orchid. Proper name is Pterostylis Grandiflora.

Not real Leopards - these are Leopard Orchids. Their proper name is Diuris Pardina, and they are one of the smallest of the Diuris genus. They are also one of the first to flower.

This is a Common Bird Orchid (Chiloglottis Valida), and was growing in a large colony. It's the only place I've ever seen these in numbers - with the special treat of a rare Green Bird Orchid in the middle of them! It's easy to see why it's called a bird orchid. Found at Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve in Croydon North, Victoria, Australia.

Proof of how smart spiders are! I was taking a macro shot of this Common Bird Orchid (Chiloglottis Valida) but I kept seeing these fine lines across the flower. I realised a very smart spider had spun it's web around the flower to make sure any visiting insect became lunch! Found at Hochkins Ridge Flora Reserve in Croydon North, Victoria, Australia.

Surfacing from the sand is a great opportunity to be in touch with nature.

It was very helpful of these Spotted Sun Orchids (Thelymitra Ixiodes) to line up so I could keep all of them in focus! Fiund at Baluk Willam Reserve in Belgrave South, Victoria, Australia.

I waited weeks for these Tongue Orchids (Cryptostylis Subulata) to come into flower. The flower stems appeared in early Spring. A couple of weeks after the first flowers appeared I went back to see how they were doing - and found this gorgeous pair!
